Water and oil-based stains perform well on shellac. This is because shellac has amazing adhesive features. It is possible to paint Laquer over Enamel Paint. Lacquer, however, has a tendency to lift Enamel Paint off of the painted surface. Apply a little bit of Lacquer in a location that is hard to see to.

Then prime over shellac. Shellac is a hard sealer but it's very smoothness reduces the tooth for painting. Of course you could sand it all for "tooth" which then reopens your bleed through factor. Primers act as a binder to the shellac and offer a grabby surface to the finished paint.

To make a primer for canvas, acrylic is better for me, it is mostly more flexible than other materials. Shellac has it’s place in an artists toolbox, but priming canvas is not it. As Gig said, it is too brittle to be applied to a soft substrate, it will crack. It is thinned with denatured alcohol, not spirits or turps.
